Heartland AEA supports a number of special events for students to participate in sports and activities in a least restrictive environment. Click on the headings to learn more about the activities.

Heartland AEA Hot Shot Basketball

Cowles Athletic Center, Simpson College, Indianola

The annual event for secondary students is a unique opportunity for students with special needs to enjoy modified winter sports and activities in a least restrictive environment. Activities include shuttle run, bean bag bocce, chest pass drills, dribbling competitions, push up races, rope jumping, sit-up races, target toss, timed shooting and wall volley.

Carroll-Heartland AEA Track and Field Day 
(Held this year in Guthrie Center due to renovations to Carroll High track)

The field day is open to all K-12 students with special needs who live in Heartland AEA’s area. Activities include more traditional-based track events such as relays, sprints, hurdles and a Nerf javelin throw, as well as some less-traditional track events such as Bocce, pedal-bike races and ring toss. No scores or places are awarded, but students are given cards to keep track of their personal best distances and times.

Simpson-Heartland AEA Invitational Track and Field Day

*All parking will be on 15th St., on the south side of the school

The field day is open to all K-12 students with special needs who live in Heartland AEA’s area. Outside activities included more traditional-based track events such as relays, sprints, hurdles and a Nerf javelin throw, as well as some less-traditional track events such as Bocce, pedal-bike races and ring toss. Indoor activities include sit-up and push-up racing, bowling, T-ball hit, yarn ball toss and jump rope. No scores or places are awarded, but students are given cards to keep track of their personal best distances and times.
