Director District Positions
Notice is hereby given that Heartland AEA will be accepting Statement of Candidacy submissions for the election of five AEA board members. The director district board positions open for election are:
District 1 – Two-year term*
Ankeny, Des Moines Independent (portion) (DM-2, DM-3, DM-4, DM-5, DM-6, DM-7, DM-8, DM-10, DM-12, DM-13, DM-14, DM-15, DM-16, DM-17, DM-18, DM-19, DM-20, DM-21, DM-22, DM-23, DM-25, DM-26, DM-27, DM-28, DM-29, DM-30, DM-31, DM-45, DM-46, DM-47, DM-48, DM-49, DM-50, PLEASANT HILL-1, PLEASANT HILL-2, PLEASANT HILL-4, WEBSTER-1) and Saydel
District 2 – Four-year term
Des Moines Independent (portion) (DM-11, DM-32, DM-33, DM-34, DM-35, DM-36, DM-37, DM-38, DM-39, DM-40, DM-41, DM-42, DM-43, DM-44, DM-51, DM-52, DM-53, DM-54, DM-55, DM-56, DM-57, DM-58, DM-59, DM-60, DM-61, DM-62, DM-63, DM-64, DM-65, DM-66, DM-67, DM-68, DM-69, DM-70, DM-71, URBANDALE-11, WDM-111, WDM-112, WINDSOR HEIGHTS-2) and West Des Moines.
District 3 – Two-year term*
Baxter, Bondurant-Farrar, Carlisle, Colfax-Mingo, Collins-Maxwell, Colo-Nesco, Indianola, Knoxville, Lynnville-Sully, Melcher-Dallas, Newton, Norwalk, PCM, Pella, Pleasantville, Southeast Polk, Southeast Warren and Twin Cedars.
District 4 – Four-year term
Adair-Casey, Adel-De Soto-Minburn, Audubon, Carroll, Coon Rapids-Bayard, Dallas Center-Grimes, Earlham, Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton, Glidden-Ralston, Guthrie Center, Interstate 35, Madrid, Martensdale-St. Marys, Ogden, Panorama, Perry, Van Meter, Waukee, West Central Valley, Winterset, and Woodward-Granger.
District 5 – Two-year term*
Ames, Ballard, Boone, Gilbert, Johnston, Nevada, North Polk, Roland-Story, United and Urbandale
*While the full term length for all seats is four years, due to redistricting, they will have designated term ends dates of 2027 or 2029 for each of the five seats.
Election Details
The board of directors of an Area Education Agency shall be elected by a vote of the members of the boards of directors of the local school districts located within the director district. The member of the Area Education Agency board to be elected may be a member of a local school district board of directors and shall be an elector and a resident of the director district, but shall not be a school district employee. A member of an area education agency board shall not serve on the board of directors of a merged area.
How to File for Candidacy
A candidate for election to the area education agency board shall file a statement of candidacy with the Heartland AEA board secretary not later than Oct. 15, 2025. The statement of candidacy form is available at the administrative office of Heartland AEA, 6500 Corporate Drive, Johnston, IA 50131 or can be downloaded at the link below.

Board members shall serve on the Heartland AEA Board of Directors beginning the first regular meeting of December 2025.
