I got a consult last week for a first grader who was diagnosed with ALL leukemia. It made me realize how seldom I get these consults but also how much changes each year, regarding treatment. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) has excellent resources for schools, families, and the child diagnosed. To look at, and bookmark, this site go to http://www.lls.org/#/resourcecenter/freeeducationmaterials/childhoodbloodcancer/
Another excellent resource for children diagnosed with childhood cancer (of any type) provides a free kit to promote connections between the child and the school during absences. It included a stuffed monkey and lots of ideas for elementary schools. Blank Children's Hospital uses this resource as do others. It requires doctor's confirmation of the diagnosis, but any health professional can access this program.
Attached to this entry are a couple of my favorite resources from LLS.
