Revocation of parental consent for placement occurs when a parent, acting in the best interest of his or her child, requests, in writing, that all special education services be terminated. The written request is responded to by an offer to meet with the parents (parents not required to meet) and a prior written notice indicating parental request. The prior written notice must specify the services that will not be provided as well as the accommodations and modifications that will no longer be guaranteed to the student under the protection of an individualized education plan (IEP). Additionally, parents will need to be notified of resources that are available, other potential ramifications of their decisions and the need for a full and individual evaluation should the parent later wish to reinstate services. Cessation of services will not happen until the parent has received the prior written notice.
