Substitute Authorization Renewal
The Substitute Authorization is valid for five years, and it shall expire five years from the date of issuance. Renewal courses can be taken between the issue date and the expiration date. These credits may be completed for license renewal credit from an Iowa Area Education Agency (AEA) or for undergraduate or graduate college credit from a regionally-accredited institution. If you are renewing an expired Substitute Authorization, credits must have been issued in the last five years.
Paraeducators Without a Bachelor’s Degree: If you hold a Paraeducator Certificate and a Substitute Authorization, your Substitute Authorization will automatically renew with your Paraeducator Certificate.
Paraeducators With a Bachelor’s Degree: If you hold a Paraeducator Certificate and a Substitute Authorization, you will want to renew both your Paraeducator Certificate and your Substitute Authorization separately.
Renewal Application Checklist
The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners has asked that you allow four weeks for processing. The renewal application is online, and you will need to upload the following documents to complete your application:
- Official transcript(s) totaling two credits (30 clock hours) issued by a college, university or AEA, verifying the successful completion of coursework that has been approved for license renewal credit. These credits must be completed between the issue date and the expiration date of your authorization or be no more than five years old.
- Documentation of completion of the Mandatory Reporter: Child and Dependent Adult Abuse training (current within five years).
To find courses currently available for license renewal credit, go to our Professional Development catalog. Search for "all" categories. In the credits column, look for a "1" or a "2" in the LR column, which stands for license renewal. You may register online if you pay with a Visa or Mastercard, or you may print off a registration form and send it in with payment.
Mandatory Reporter Training
There is a fee for all individuals taking the Mandatory Reporter: Child and Dependent Adult Abuse training. The training can be accessed through the AEA Learning Online Learning System.
