Authentic Intellectual Work (AIW)

Heartland AEA offers professional development around Authentic Intellectual Work (AIW), a research-based framework that helps teachers analyze and improve the quality of student thinking through team-based discussions. Teachers who emphasize AIW in the classroom take their students’ learning to a higher level through original (authentic) application of knowledge and skills, rather than routine use of facts and procedures. Careful consideration is taken into intellectual challenges and expectations that are promoted in lessons, assignments and assessments and the corresponding student work.
