Iowa Science Standards Module 4 Workshops

These two-day sessions are a continuation of the work done the last three years with the Iowa Core Science Standards Overview (Module 1), the Classroom Transitions, Shifts and Practices (Module 2) and Gathering & Using Evidence of Student Learning (Module 3). Participation in Modules 1-3 or equivalent online participation in Modules 1-3 is recommended but not a prerequisite for Module 4. The Module 4 focus will be on “Science and Literacy.” All workshops are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Module 4 Learning Targets:

  1. Develop learning experiences that promote students’ use of the SEPs and take into consideration the developmental literacy levels of my learners.
  2. Support the development of my students’ use of both general content-area and specific disciplinary literacy strategies in constructing scientific arguments.
  3. Engineer my classroom space, schedule and technology to support productive science experiences and communication happening on a daily basis (teacher led AND student-led).
  4. Use best practices for supporting and promoting student use of reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing to promote students’ understanding of science core ideas/science standards.
  5. Identify, model and apply different strategies (e.g., close reading, annotating text, creating/analyzing graphs, etc.) to assist students with reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing for understanding in science.

Educators have the option of taking the Iowa Science Standards Module 1 training from AEA Learning Online. This can be used as a review or as new learning for those who were unable to take Module 1. If you choose to take the online version of Module 1, we encourage you to do this session as a group, so you have collaborative conversations. To access Module 1 Online, go to the AEA Learning Online website. Click on the "Catalog" button and search for "science standards." Participants will need to login (or create a login) in order to take this online module.

Educators may also take the Iowa Science Standards Module 2 on Canvas. Like Module 1, this can be used as a review or as new learning. To access Module 2 Online, go to Canvas. You will either need to establish a free account in Canvas, or if you have an existing account, just login. (To gain access to Module 2 on Canvas, contact the Heartland AEA science consultant assigned to your school.)

Note: Two days of coursework is recommended for completion of Module 4.  This year, when you sign up for Day 1, you will automatically be signed up for Day 2. If you need to change locations, contact the instructor so he/she can ensure adequate seating and handouts for all participants.
