Collaboration Spotlight: Enhancing Student Literacy Outcomes in Twin Cedars

Twin Cedars Elementary and Heartland AEA have been working collaboratively to increase literacy outcomes for all students. Through a multi-faceted approach of data review, instruction, intervention and professional learning, proficiency is improving.

Some examples of the partnership include:

  • Twin Cedars received the Iowa Reading Corps AmeriCorps grant where a Reading Corps Tutor provides one-on-one literacy interventions matched to individual student need.

  • Heartland AEA’s Professional Learning and Leadership Consultant serves as master coach to review intervention implementation and monthly review of progress data along with the district internal coach.

  • Staff attend training and are working to implement evidenced-based instructional materials.

  • Elementary staff have begun more frequent review of student data and instruction in the area of literacy. Analysis of data occurs after each benchmark assessment. Additionally, elementary grade level teams have begun follow-up progress review sessions.

  • Heartland AEA staff support the review process at both benchmark assessment and progress data review sessions. Decision-making protocols and tools are provided to guide discussions.
