Collaboration Spotlight: Supporting North Polk Students Through PBIS

North Polk’s Central Elementary recognized opportunities to boost efforts to support student behavior and invited Heartland AEA staff to collaborate on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) implementation.

The partnership kicked off by exploring the current status of the elementary’s system and identifying areas of strength and opportunities for growth. Central’s new PBIS coach started building a framework and a PBIS team, partnering with Heartland AEA staff for support in their Tier 1 PBIS training and the initial development of the school’s PBIS framework.

Heartland AEA coaches collaborated with Central staff by attending Tier 1 trainings and PBIS meetings, evaluating the fidelity and effectiveness of practices and helping staff build capacity for coaching, planning meetings as well as providing resources.

At the end of the 2015-16 school year, Central staff earned a score that suggested they were implementing PBIS with fidelity. They had used the web-based School-wide Information System (SWIS) to track behavior data and over the course of the school year recognized that average referrals per day had decreased.

“When doing a walk-through at the end of the school year, just about every student we interviewed said that they were acknowledged recently for engaging in positive behaviors, which suggests that our staff are doing a great job in pointing out positive behaviors.”

“Central continues to excel in their Tier 1 practices and are currently exploring the possibility of expanding to provide Tier 2 supports. We’re excited to support them as they take the next steps to build their system to support students’ social-emotional development.”
