Collaboration Leads to Improvements in Math Fluency at I-35

When the opportunity arose for Heartland AEA math consultants to work alongside the Interstate 35 administration team to improve math education, they jumped at the chance.

Following observation and research to understand the district’s vision, Heartland AEA offered a professional development plan to help the district meet its initial math and professional learning needs, including:

  • Best practices training for grade 6-12 teachers including techniques to teach conceptually

  • Integration of new curriculum materials more closely aligned to Iowa Core

  • Intense professional learning on focus, coherence and rigor of Iowa Core math

  • Textbook review and adoption of new textbooks

Achievements in the 6-12 secondary math team helped launch a professional development focus for the K-5 math team. The K-5 team is increasing its understanding of the focus, coherence and rigor required by Iowa Core, studying best practices and instructional strategies, such as Number Talks, and exploring ways to increase the rigor of lessons/tasks based on the depth of knowledge levels required by math standards at each grade level.

Photo of Kevin Fiene “The results I’m seeing are impressive,” said Dr. Kevin Fiene, superintendent of the Interstate 35 Schools. “Students are more engaged; they have a better understanding of the language of math and its application. Teachers are identifying additional opportunities for student learning and are equipped with best practices. Parents appreciate the work being done in our math curriculum, and all of this leads to increased student achievement.”
