Collaboration Spotlight: Focusing on Student Achievement in Urbandale

Finding effective strategies and resources is imperative in helping students with special needs excel. Since some aspects of the field are continually changing, teaching professionals in the Urbandale Community School District partnered with Heartland AEA to focus on strategies for student achievement.

Through this partnership, special education teachers who work with preK-12 students with moderate to intensive behavior participated in professional learning activities. Small learning groups were formed to help teachers build upon their knowledge, skills and competencies, provide coaching and consultation, and offer ample opportunities to apply in the field what they learned as they moved through the training levels.

Jason Volmer, Coordinator of Special Education in the Urbandale Community School District reports that bringing the Heartland AEA and Urbandale school staff together to learn about behavior was a huge advantage for them. Their staff had the opportunity to learn more about behavior, about the functions of behavior and how they can utilize functional behavior assessment practices to assist with identifying a positive behavior support plan to serve children in need.
