Collaboration Spotlight: Developing Leaders in Science at I-35

July 6, 2016

Interstate 35 is an early implementer of Iowa Core Science Standards in the state. So it was the delight of Heartland AEA to support the district’s efforts to understand and implement the vision and concepts of new Iowa Core Science Standards.

The Agency has provided resources, instructional learning techniques and coaching for:

  • Support of their K-12 Science Committee

  • 3D learning, Iowa Core and Next Generation Science Standards exploration

  • Iowa Core Science Standards professional development

  • Classroom observation in the Southeast Polk and Norwalk districts

As a result, high school teachers have made changes in course offerings and/or descriptions, middle school teachers have worked on science scope and sequence and elementary teachers have started to develop professional development for their colleagues' learning.

“I believe that any one of our team members can be leaders in science not only for our district but statewide,” said Stephanie Good, Interstate 35 High School Science Teacher.

“The administration wholeheartedly supports the teachers and they trust their professional judgment. They picked excellent representatives to do this work on behalf of the district,” said Peggy Christensen, Heartland AEA Science Curriculum Consultant.
